The provincial government on Monday banned the use of compressed natural gas (CNG)-fitted vehicles for movement of VVIPs and VIPs, said a press release issued by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P)Home and Tribal Affairs department.
The government is acting on the directives of the Ministry of Human Rights and has instructed authorities to take prompt action to implement the rule. The measure comes
amid security concerns and to ensure foolproof safety during VIP movement.
Those officials running cars on CNG for economic viability must ensure the CNG kits match international standards, said the handout. All provincial government departments have been told to take notice of the laxity/lack of responsiveness and initiate disciplinary action to prevent loss of life and property. The transport department and district administrations will also inspect public service vehicles to ensure adherence to safety standards for CNG kits.
Earlier, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) had decided to make it a cognizable offence so car owners would think twice before installing spurious gas kits and cylinders. It further directed the K-P government to enact legislation to ensure the safety of passengers in public transport vehicles using CNG.
